It is important for children to maintain a healthy weight because being overweight is bad for almost all of the body’s organs. Additionally, it has a huge impact on a child’s emotional health. Therefore, keeping kids at a healthy weight will help prevent them from developing health problems as they age.

Parenting Tips: How Parents Can Help Their Children Maintain A Healthy Weight

The main goal for children who are excessively overweight is to reduce the rate of weight gain while allowing normal growth and development.

1. Develop healthy eating habits in children at a young age

--> Always include a lot of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains in your child’s diet

--> Offer low-fat dairy products, including cheese

--> For protein-rich foods, including lean meats, poultry, fish, lentils, and beans

--> Help your child drink enough water

--> Try to limit sugary drinks and processed foods.

2. Be a role model

Have you ever noticed that sometimes your child acts just like you or even picks up your habits? Children naturally imitate what they observe in their environment. Change your eating habits and lifestyle habits as a family. If parents are not prepared to make positive changes, it is unreasonable to expect children to do so.

3. Help children stay physically active

Children should be physically active because it is linked to benefits such as:

--> Strengthening bones

--> Reducing stress and depression

--> Increasing self-esteem, and many others

Physical activity will also help control children’s weight. Children between the ages of 2 and 15 should be active for at least 30 to 60 minutes every day.

4. Quality sleep is necessary

Because insufficient sleep affects eating habits and physical activity, children who experience sleep disruptions or get too little sleep are more likely to be overweight. Compared to adults, kids need more sleep.

5. Limit the screen time

A child’s general health and well-being may suffer from too much screen usage. Children can use screens for no more than 2 to 3 hours per day. Try to keep children from spending too much time on screens and encourage them to be active.

Diet Is Not The Solution For Children

If your child is excessively overweight, please do not push them on a diet, especially without consulting your child’s doctor. A child who is on a diet may sometimes weigh more than a child who is not on a diet and may be more sensitive to eating problems.
