Summer is a challenging season for your skin because it is when you are most likely to get many skin problems like acne, rashes, pimples, and so on. Simply follow the summer skincare routine throughout the summer to protect your skin from skin problems.

How Does The Summer Weather Affect Your Skin?

As the weather warms and the humidity in the air increases, the body loses water which results in dehydration. This can cause the skin to feel itchy, red, and dry. So, constantly keep the skin hydrated. The heat of summer causes your skin to sweat more, and your sebaceous glands secrete more oil. Acne outbreaks, pimples, and blemishes on the face occur when dead skin cells come into contact with excess oil and sweat.

Of course, too much scorching sun is bad for your skin. It can reduce moisture levels, causing dryness and premature aging, as well as prickly skin irritation. When your skin is overexposed to UV rays, your body produces melanin to protect it from sun damage. Though melanin has photoprotective properties, too much of it causes darker, tanned skin.

Basic Skincare Routine

Summer is a challenging season for our skin. The scorching sun and incredible heat can harm the skin in various ways. To protect your skin from the sun and to avoid any skin problems, I have put together a guide based on my personal experience, sharing the basic skincare routine for all skin types that will help you protect your skin this summer.

1. Consider a Change in Cleansing

Oil secretion and sweating are unavoidable throughout the summer. The sun becomes worse when there is more sweat and extra oil secretion from the skin, resulting in acne breakouts, pimples, and blemishes. To avoid such skin problems, it is important to cleanse the skin twice a day, in the morning after waking up and at night before going to bed. Cleansing is highly necessary for the summer, but choosing the right cleansing product for your skin type is also equally important.

You were cleansing your skin with nourishing face wash during the winter, but those cleansing products would not work in the summer. In the summer, your face cleanser should remove excess oil from the skin.

Note: For oily to normal, sensitive skin, a foaming cleanser would be best, while for dry to combination skin, a non-foaming cleanser is best.

2. Exfoliate to Achieve Smoother Skin

Your skin suffers from dryness and dullness throughout the summer, in addition to excess oil. Exfoliate your skin using a face scrub on a regular basis to avoid skin problems. Face scrubs not only remove dry and dead skin cells from the pores of the skin, but they also help to regenerate the skin. However, be careful not to over-exfoliate your skin, as this might cause rashes.

Note: Exfoliating your skin once or twice a week is more than enough to see the magic.

3. Use a Refreshing Toner

Basically, a good refreshing works to close all of the skin's open pores. During the summer, the skin secretes more oil, which collects in the open pores, resulting in acne breakouts. This type of skin problem can be avoided by using a refreshing toner on your skin after cleansing or exfoliation.

4. Use a Moisturizer with a Dual Purpose

Using a moisturizer and sunscreen separately in the summer is just too much for the skin. It can result in either clogged pores or acne breakouts. However, it is best to use a lightweight moisturizer with an SPF of 30 or higher, which will not only protect but also moisturize your skin.

5. Use Sunscreen to Protect your Skin

In fact, sunscreen is your best buddy in the summer because sun rays can harm the skin at any time of year or season change. Never leave home without sunscreen, because it is an important part of any skincare routine, especially during the summer months. It prevents premature aging of the skin. So, choose a sunscreen that is easy to absorb. When going out in the sun, a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should be applied at least half an hour before going out.

If you plan to spend the entire day in the sun, make sure to reapply sunscreen every 3 hours. People with oily skin should also wear sunscreen; they can use gel-based sunscreen. For a combination to dry skin, use a matte finish sunscreen moisturizer or a cream-based sunscreen that absorbs easily into the skin. Also, there would be no leftover layer.

Note: Sunscreen should be applied not only on the face but also on any exposed body parts.

6. Keep Your Skin Hydrated

The most basic and important skincare routine involves drinking plenty of water. Many of us spend more money on expensive skincare products to keep our skin looking young and healthy, but the simplest and most cost-effective solution is to drink as much water as possible throughout the day. Drinking more water not only helps in the removal of toxins from the body but also keeps the skin smooth and glowing.

To keep your skin hydrated, invest in a good hydrating mask that you can use a couple of times each week. Wash your face first, and then apply the mask at night. This is the best time to apply the mask because it repairs, hydrates, and soothes the skin. A mask can also be used to treat specific skin problems like dryness, acne breakouts, and oiliness.

7. Cut the Level of Make-up

Wearing minimal facial make-up in the summer allows the skin to breathe better. Because the skin's capacity to breathe is restricted by humidity and heat in the summer. So, use a tinted moisturizer, concealer, lip balm, and organic kajal to give your skin a break, especially in the summer. When the climate is hot, make-up tends to move around. So, the best way is to wear it less often.

8. Do not forget to take care of your Feet

When the sizzling summer begins, most of us completely focus on taking care of our faces because it is the first thing that comes to mind, and it is also the first thing that everyone sees. But, taking care of the feet is equally important because your feet carry you around all day. Exfoliate your feet on a regular basis, use a foot moisturizer, and apply sunscreen.

9. Understand the value of Natural Remedies

In fact, many people find that the skin care products available on the market work wonders. However, it is good to understand the value of natural ingredients that are readily available in the kitchen. Some of the best ingredients like gram flour, turmeric powder, milk, curd, etc., may be perfect for a facial cleanser, toners, and moisturizers, especially in the summer.

10. Give special care to the Eye Region

When selecting a moisturizer, cream, and toner for your face, keep in mind that the skin around your eyes is particularly thin and fragile. So, choose the best under-eye gel. This gel moisturizes and protects the skin around the eyes, preventing wrinkles.

11. Consume Healthy Food

Eating healthy is important for all seasons, especially during summer, so go for seasonal fruits and veggies like tender coconut, ice apple, watermelon, muskmelon, citrus fruits, cucumbers, and so on. These foods keep the body cool and hydrated.

12. Avoid Sugary Drinks

Actually, sugary drinks make you feel drowsy during the summer. Additionally, they do not give any cooling effect to the body because they do not have any hydrating properties. So, instead of sugary and carbonated drinks, choose natural, fresh fruit juices.

Final Thought

When the seasons change, it is quite common for the skin to change as well. Dry weather during the winter reduces the skin’s natural moisture, resulting in dry, scaly, and itchy skin. Similarly, during the summer, the humidity and heat in the air cause bacterial infections, clogged pores, and acne breakouts.

So, each season has its own set of rules and suggestions for skincare. Summer requires extra focus and care for the skin. By following a simple skincare routine like cleansing, toning, moisturizing, staying hydrated, and using sunscreen, you can protect and care for your skin from the harmful effects of the sizzling sun and heat.
