What Is Heat Stroke And Why Does It Happen?
Heatstroke, also known as sunstroke, is a type of
heat-related problem that happens when your child's core body temperature rises
above 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
Causes of Heat Stroke
The main cause of heatstroke in children is their body's
sweating mechanism, which makes it difficult for them to cool down when the humidity
level in their environment exceeds 60% (they are unable to correct their body
temperature on their own).
Dehydration is another common cause of heatstroke, and it
worsens the situation.
What Are The Symptoms Of Heat Stroke?
--> Dry skin
--> High body temperature (temperature exceeding 104
degrees F)
--> Dizziness and Severe headache
--> Increased breathing and heartbeat
--> Loss of consciousness or fainting
--> There is little or no sweating (even when the
temperature is hot)
--> Vomiting or a sense of being about to vomit
--> Too low or too high blood pressure
--> Low urine output
--> Seizures
If left untreated, heatstroke can become a life-threatening
emergency. So, parents, if you notice any of the above-mentioned symptoms, it
is highly recommended that you seek medical attention immediately.
Note: These symptoms of heatstroke can occur in adults too. If you or an elderly person in your area shows signs of heatstroke, urge them to see a doctor and take the necessary precautions to avoid heatstroke in the future.
What Are The Steps For Treating Heat Stroke In Children?
Heatstroke requires immediate medical attention. If you are
waiting for an ambulance or on your way to the hospital, try to keep the
children as cool as possible by following the suggestions below:
--> Place a wet cloth over your child's armpits, neck,
back, and private areas to lower the body's core temperature.
--> Remove any unnecessary or heavy clothing and place
your child in an air-conditioned, shady, or well-ventilated environment.
--> Do not allow them to drink sugary drinks; instead,
give them lightly salted water
--> If possible, immerse their body in Lukewarm water
What Should You Do After Medical Treatment?
If your child had medical treatment and has recovered from
heatstroke, kindly follow the below suggestions:
--> Do not allow them to go outside or play in direct
sunlight (between 10 am to 4 pm)
--> Do not allow them to participate in high-intensity activities
such as running, swimming, cricket, and other sports until their doctor says it
is safe for them to resume their normal activities and playtime.
How Can Children Prevent Heat Stroke?
It is important for parents to understand the symptoms of
heatstroke, but it is also important to take the necessary steps to protect
their children from heatstroke. The best approach to preventing them is to do
the following:
(i) Shade - When your children are playing outside in hot weather, encourage them to play in the shade or ask them to take frequent breaks in the shade.
(ii) Stay hydrated - Children often forget to drink water
while playing. So, make sure your child drinks enough water before, during, and
after their playtime.
Note: Make sure your children get enough water at a regular interval.
(iii) Clothing is important - Encourage children to dress in
light-colored, loose-fitting clothing during the hot summer months, especially
during playtime. Also, do not leave them out in the sun for too long.
Note: If they are overheated or have a different feeling, ask them to come home right away.
Final Thought
I hope you have gained a basic knowledge of heatstroke.
Parents, please keep an eye on your children, especially as the summer season comes
to an end. Take any small changes in your children seriously and follow the necessary
procedures based on the symptoms. In fact, it is best if you call for professional
medical help right away.
